Trail etiquette matters
Mountain biking can be challenging, especially for beginners who face many choices about bike settings, nutrition, what to wear, safety, and when and where to ride. However, it can also be very rewarding. Mountain biking offers fun trails, downhill rides, beautiful views, and good exercise. Whether you're a beginner or experienced, it's essential to understand trail etiquette.
The Mohican MTB trail is a multi-use trail for mountain bikers, hikers, and trail runners. Sometimes trail users bring their furry friends with them, too. Always warn others you are coming. When approaching someone on the trail, say hello, slow down, and pass carefully, telling them which side you pass on.
When riding with a group, let others know you're coming, which side you'll pass on, and how many riders are behind you. If you're alone, state your presence and which side you're passing on. Additionally, downhill riders should yield to uphill riders, and watch for other trail users as you turn corners.
The Mohican MTB trail intersects with horse trails in several spots. Mountain bikers must always yield to horses and their riders. Horses can get scared easily, so provide them space and time. It's a good idea to greet them as you come closer, helping the horse recognize you as a person rather than a threat.
Miles 0 to 8 at Mohican are bi-directional or two-way trails. Keep in mind what we've outlined above and be aware of riders coming toward you. Be prepared to move to the side for oncoming mountain bikers and take extra care near turns and corners.
Following proper trail etiquette is essential for ensuring that all trail users enjoy a safe and pleasant experience while visiting Mohican. It also plays a crucial role in helping us, as a club, maintain ongoing access to the state park and forest, which is vital for both trail maintenance and future development efforts.
When you ride Mohican, be nice, say hello.
