Class 1 e-bikes permitted at Mohican
As of January 1, 2025, Class 1 e-bikes are now allowed on the designated MTB trails at Mohican State Park. The updated Ohio Code states that it is unlawful to “Operate an electric bicycle, other than a class 1 electric bicycle on natural surface trails designated specifically as mountain bike trails.” A Class 1 e-bike is defined as pedal-assist only, no throttle, and a maximum assisted speed of 20 mph.
As a club, we promote the use of Class 1 e-bikes. We believe they help people get outdoors and active -they help riders navigate more technical terrain and climbs that they may shy away from otherwise. The more riders that can enjoy our trail system, the better.
We’re thankful the code was amended because it’ll make our job of clearing trees a little easier. Together, our local bike shops, Y-Not Cycling and Ashland Bike Company donated a Class 1 e-bike to MMBC to help us access down trees more quickly and efficiently.
Until now, club members hiked to all down trees - often times up to 3 miles one way - carrying with them chain saws and safety equipment. This Class 1 e-bike lets us securely pack our equipment and pedal efficiently and quickly to down trees so you can keep riding.
